Worms has been labeled as the Ultimate Environmental Savior or the Earth's Best Friend or Waste Renewal Units, due to their ability to turn foodwaste/organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. Not only can they eat their own body weight in organic waste every day, but they actually remove -- or neutralize -- many of the toxins in that waste in the process, according to The Ecologist.
Worm compost:
- improves soil quality;
- prevents plant diseases;
- speeds up seed germination;
- combats soil erosion;
- increases the soil's ability to store water (thereby diminishing the amount of water needed by the trees and plants);
- according to The Ecologist, "fixes heavy metals and reduces mineral leaching from the soil."
Scientists in India have found that worms' digestive systems and regenerative abilities are so remarkable that they can actually absorb toxic materials yet expel toxic-free manure. According to the Indian newspaper, India Together, researchers in Gujarat have found that worms can "detox" the organic parts of the industrial sludge which results from the effluent treatment of industrial or hazardous waste.
The method is ideal for industries -- such as paper, food processing, oil, textiles, dairy, distilleries and agro-chemicals -- where there is large enough organic components in the industrial sludge, Indian researchers say.
However, worms are not as green as it seems. German research shows that they actually emit potent greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide, which is 296 times more powerful than CO2 and 23 times more powerful than methane. CO2, methane & nitrous oxide are the greenhouse gas that causes Global Warming!!
Those goodness of the worms has been offset by its powerful greenhouse gas emissions. But there are not many people aware of the hidden damage of this little worm yet and so far I did not see any countries doing something about it to prevent or minimise its damage. Our government, without realising the damage, even started to build a large vermicomposting site in Terengganu to accomodate with the high rising price of chemical composts. Though this would help easing the farmers' living but would kill the earth slowly...
Hopefully those countries that have been encouraging vermicomposting (worms composting), either households or commercial, would at least STOP those very huge commercial vermicomposting projects until further solution being sought out. Perhaps utilising the Nitrous Oxide for other uses...
