Both The Savior and The Destroyer.... Earthworms!!

Worms has been labeled as the Ultimate Environmental Savior or the Earth's Best Friend or Waste Renewal Units, due to their ability to turn foodwaste/organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. Not only can they eat their own body weight in organic waste every day, but they actually remove -- or neutralize -- many of the toxins in that waste in the process, according to The Ecologist.

Worm compost:
  • improves soil quality;
  • prevents plant diseases;
  • speeds up seed germination;
  • combats soil erosion;
  • increases the soil's ability to store water (thereby diminishing the amount of water needed by the trees and plants);
  • according to The Ecologist, "fixes heavy metals and reduces mineral leaching from the soil."

Scientists in India have found that worms' digestive systems and regenerative abilities are so remarkable that they can actually absorb toxic materials yet expel toxic-free manure. According to the Indian newspaper, India Together, researchers in Gujarat have found that worms can "detox" the organic parts of the industrial sludge which results from the effluent treatment of industrial or hazardous waste.

The method is ideal for industries -- such as paper, food processing, oil, textiles, dairy, distilleries and agro-chemicals -- where there is large enough organic components in the industrial sludge, Indian researchers say.

However, worms are not as green as it seems. German research shows that they actually emit potent greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide, which is 296 times more powerful than CO2 and 23 times more powerful than methane. CO2, methane & nitrous oxide are the greenhouse gas that causes Global Warming!!

Those goodness of the worms has been offset by its powerful greenhouse gas emissions. But there are not many people aware of the hidden damage of this little worm yet and so far I did not see any countries doing something about it to prevent or minimise its damage. Our government, without realising the damage, even started to build a large vermicomposting site in Terengganu to accomodate with the high rising price of chemical composts. Though this would help easing the farmers' living but would kill the earth slowly...

Hopefully those countries that have been encouraging vermicomposting (worms composting), either households or commercial, would at least STOP those very huge commercial vermicomposting projects until further solution being sought out. Perhaps utilising the Nitrous Oxide for other uses...

Canon Goes Green - please support and sign up to be volunteer !!!!

Canon launched an environmental campaign called "Canon Goes Green" some time ago. For this campaign, Canon will plant 2500 saplings in Padang Kota Damansara. All you have to do is just submit a photo. Yes, ANY photo. It can be photo taken by any camera, Canon or non-Canon cameras. It's really that simple and anyone can do it!!!

Oh ya, please sign up as a volunteer as well. I will rush back from Justin concert in Genting on the 18th Oct. to help out on the planting. C u guys there!!

"Polluted" Food

China melamine-tainted milk products has brought up serious concerns on food quality and unethical business mindset of companies that prioritize only on maximizing profits by all means, including risking millions of lives.

However, I'm not here to talk about China tainted milk products as I think you could read more about it from newspaper. I wanted to share with you a far more serious food pollution which has deeper implication and far-stretched impacts on us, and most importantly our future generation: GENETIC ENGINEERED FOOD

To read more details, please click on the link below:

http://www.themostnatural.com.my/changeclimate/images/EarthMatter/Info/GMO.jpg

GE is very common today in our daily food consumption. Examples:
  • Insulin producted from GE bacteria
  • Fruits and vegetables - to make it more resistant, bigger and visually attractive
  • Food products (rice, corns, etc) to be resistant to bacteria
  • Genes from fish have been inserted into tomatoes to prolong shelve life
All this is to minimize foodwaste from perishable commodities and increase profitability of the food manufacturers. However, GE or GM (Genetic Modified) food is very dangerous as scientists are still yet to know the invisible negative side effect of DNA mutation and it is irreversible. Even the Asian's staple food, rice, is GE to resist pesticides and herbicides. There is no long term safety testing on these GE food that uses materials from organisms that have never been part of the human food supply to change the fundamental nature of the food we eat.

Fundamental Weaknesses of GE Food:

1. Imprecise Technology - GE may disrupt the functioning of other genes essential to the life of that organism
2. Do not have full knowledge of the impacts and consequences
3. Decreased nutritional value of crop by its misleading counterfeit freshness
4. Knowing their GE crops can tolerate the pesticides and herbicides, farmers will use them more liberally.
5. Once GE organisms are releases into the environment, it's impossible to contain or recall them.

So the only solution left is: EAT ORGANIC FOOD and BE A VEGETARIAN!!

I will start eating organic food when I had my own family.

Mission Statement

Basically just sharing latest global 'Green' issues/development, 'Green' biz ideas and etc...
By the way, sorry for my bad english.... will try to minimise the mistake...
